Mark Ariyoshi

Mark Ariyoshi is a graphic designer who has lived in Tacoma since 1987. He has an intense passion for all creative disciplines, finding inspiration in daily life. Most importantly, he believes in art's power to unify people and believes that art, both viewing it, and the process of making it, should be accessible to everyone.

My goal with this series is to celebrate these Tacoma landmarks for what they are - places that contribute to Tacoma's civic identity. Some are taken for granted as part of the Tacoma landscape. Others are in bad disrepair, awaiting the wrecking ball. At least one no longer exists (the Japanese Language School, demolished in 2004). While none of these places are likely to play a high-profile part in Tacoma's "renaissance," they're important to me because collectively they tell Tacoma's story. I'm proud that Tacoma still has places with such visual, architectural and historical character, and hope they can survive our current rush to redefine ourselves.
